May 2026

Garden season is here once again, and at the Mission that means more than soil, seeds, and sunshine. It means expectation.

There is something about this time of year that stirs the heart of our community. This year nearly everyone wants a place in the garden. Each person has been given a small plot to tend and something meaningful is taking place. The garden is not only producing food; it is creating space for men and women to participate, to contribute, and to take responsibility for something entrusted to them.

There is something special about seeing each person care for a little piece of ground. Some plant with great care. Some water with steady faithfulness. Some are learning slowly, step by step. Others are already delighting in what is beginning to grow. And in it all there is the honest satisfaction of meaningful work, the kind of work that reminds a person that their hands can create, their choices matter, and their lives can bear good fruit.

Our Lord Himself spoke in this way: “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how.” —Mark 4:26–27

Such is the mystery of grace. We labor, we pray, we walk together—but God gives the growth.

The men and women in our program are not merely growing vegetables. They are being invited into the kind of work that restores dignity and strengthens community. They are learning faithfulness in small things. They are discovering that they are not only people in need of help, but people with gifts to offer and a meaningful role to play in the life of the community.

What may seem like a simple garden bed becomes, for many, a place of renewal, where isolation gives way to shared labor, discouragement gives way to purpose, and small acts of stewardship begin to bear fruit.

We believe that people flourish as they are invited to participate in the work God is doing in them and around them, not merely receiving help, but learning to labor, to serve, to contribute, and to grow.

Thank you for making this work possible. Through your kindness, men and women here are given space to grow, to contribute, and to discover that their lives are capable of bearing fruit.

If you were to walk past the garden beds today, you would see more than plants rising from the earth.

You would see hope taking root.

Signs of Restoration

The stories that follow offer a glimpse of the quiet, steady work God is doing in the lives of men and women at the Mission. Just as growth in a garden often begins unseen, restoration is taking root in small but meaningful ways—through renewed faith, healing, responsibility, community, and hope.

Restoring a Relationship with God

Over the past month, we have seen signs of God’s gentle work in the lives of several program participants. Through Scripture, Christian community, and ongoing discipleship, He is drawing hearts to Himself, deepening trust, and renewing hope. We are grateful to witness these quiet but meaningful steps of spiritual growth.

Danny J. has been asking thoughtful questions as he begins to understand more clearly who Jesus is and why He is worthy of worship. He shared that he is “slowly beginning to understand,” and staff have been encouraged by his openness to Scripture, church attendance, and deeper reflection on what it means to truly know the Lord.

Dee S. continues to grow in trusting God’s providence during a painful season. She recently shared her testimony at women’s Bible study, where her story deeply encouraged others, and she is being lovingly supported by women in the church as she continues to hope in the Lord.

Rachel M. recently attended her first women’s Bible study and found both the teaching and fellowship deeply encouraging. As she walks through personal challenges involving her son, she shared that trusting the Lord is helping her respond with greater calm and steadiness.

Theresa D. shared that Scripture and the program’s teaching are helping “things begin to make sense.” She is learning to see her daily responsibilities as opportunities to glorify the Lord, and this growing perspective is bringing renewed purpose and joy.

A Restored Relationship with Self

Over the past month, we have seen encouraging signs of healing and growth as several participants have begun to live with greater honesty, confidence, and peace. In different ways, the Lord is helping them face new challenges, receive His care, and grow in responsibility and courage. These small but meaningful steps reflect the quiet work of restoration taking place within.

Makenzie D. continues to grow in confidence and responsibility. She is stepping forward to help where needed, trying new things, and showing encouraging progress as she learns to pace herself and live with greater peace.

Danny J. is beginning to reflect more honestly on his inner life and ask deeper questions about who he is and why he struggles. Though the process is still new, his willingness to examine his life thoughtfully is an encouraging sign of personal growth.

Vanessa T. is stepping into new responsibilities with honesty and courage. She shared that she feels both “nervous and excited” about cooking this week, and it has been encouraging to see her face new challenges with growing composure and hope.

Restoring Relationships with Others

Over the past month, we have seen encouraging growth in how participants relate to others with humility, openness, and care. Through Christian community and discipleship, the Lord is restoring trust, strengthening fellowship, and teaching what it means to walk in peace.

Jacqualine K. recently navigated a moment of tension with humility and grace. Through honest conversation and a willingness to listen, she and another participant were able to move toward peace, reflecting growing maturity and a desire to protect relationship over conflict.

Rachel M. was warmly welcomed into a local women’s Bible study, where she found meaningful fellowship and support. That growing connection is helping her carry current family burdens with less isolation and greater encouragement.

Manuel S. continues to make steady progress as he prepares to move into Term 3. Through discipleship at Jacksonville Presbyterian, supportive relationships within the Mission, and a new opportunity to serve by cleaning the church kitchens each week, he is growing in both connection and responsibility.

A Restored Relationship with Creation

Over the past month, we have seen encouraging growth in how participants are approaching work, responsibility, and stewardship. In simple but meaningful ways, the Lord is helping them use their time, gifts, and resources with greater diligence and purpose.

Makenzie D. is embracing responsibility with growing diligence and joy. She has shown interest in serving in the kitchen, and the meals she prepares are already becoming a meaningful contribution to the life of the house.

Brian M. has been using his reflection time in ways that bless the wider community. Staff were encouraged to hear him consistently playing hymns helping create an atmosphere that reminds others that worship can shape the everyday rhythms of life.

Matteo B. is also growing in stewardship and responsibility. He is reviewing his finances regularly, practicing tithing and giving, and working toward a clear stewardship plan, reflecting increasing maturity in the way he handles resources and daily responsibilities.

Theresa D. is beginning to see daily tasks in a new light. She shared that routine and responsibility are no longer just things to get through, but “opportunities to glorify the Lord,” and that perspective is helping her find renewed meaning in ordinary work.

Vanessa T. is stepping into the practical work of cooking this week with both excitement and courage. Though she admitted feeling a little nervous, she is leaning in with a willingness to learn, serve, and grow through the responsibility.
